Seattle has a new crown jewel—
Overlook Walk, a highly anticipated elevated park that debuted this past October as part of the city’s transformative Waterfront Park project. This extraordinary addition to Seattle’s urban landscape provides a pathway among downtown neighborhoods, Pike Place Market, and the revitalized 20-acre Waterfront Park along Elliot Bay. Guests at Hotel 1000, located nearby, are perfectly positioned to explore this new, exciting landmark, which offers free events, art installations, and more.
“Overlook Walk is a testament to Seattle’s innovative spirit, celebrating our rich history while inviting everyone to enjoy the city’s breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant culture,” says Mayor Bruce Harrell. “Overlook Walk will forever change how residents, families, workers, and visitors experience our city now and for future generations—and is proof positive what we can accomplish together with a shared One Seattle vision.”
Built on the footprint of the former Alaskan Way Viaduct, Overlook Walk represents the most ambitious civic project in Seattle since the 1962 World’s Fair. The park seamlessly connects downtown and the waterfront, creating the first pedestrian pathway that bridges a 100-foot vertical gap between the bustling Pike Place Market and the Park Promenade.
The elevated green space offers 360-degree views of some of Seattle’s most iconic sites, including the Space Needle, Elliot Bay, the Olympic Mountains, and even Mount Rainier on a clear day. Visitors can enjoy stunning panoramas, capturing Insta-worthy views of downtown Seattle, Lumen Field, T-Mobile Park, and the waterfront. Ample seating areas invite them to relax and soak in the sights. The park will also include a concessionaire space, slated to open in 2025, featuring small, local businesses.
Thoughtfully designed to embody the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest through its urban landscape, Overlook Walk relies on carefully curated plants to reflect the rich ecological diversity of the area. The Bluff Walk pathway showcases a progression of vegetation, mirroring the region’s natural environment. As you move across varying elevations, the landscape transitions from grasses to ferns and shrubs, featuring native species such as Vine Maple, Western Sword Fern, and Nootka Rose. By early 2025, Overlook Walk’s Salish Steps will highlight large-scale artwork paying tribute to the Native heritage of the waterfront.
The result of strong partnerships and a desire to create a greener, more accessible, and connected cityscape and community, the $70-million project adds approximately 60,000 square feet of new elevated park space to the city’s waterfront. The park is open seven days a week from 7am to 10pm.
As Overlook Walk takes its place alongside the Space Needle and Pike Place Market as a symbol of Seattle’s identity, now is the perfect time to book a stay at Hotel 1000 and be among the first to experience this transformative addition to the Emerald City.
